My father, "Dad" trained as a doctor from Bhopal. In 1961, he travelled to England to pursue a career in medicine. Before going he was given "The Golden Rules" by his parents. "Don't smoke, don't drink and don't marry a British woman." Wearing his only suit, a red one. he ended up in Greenock Scotland.

Five years later, he returned to India with a box of cigars in his case, a botte of whisky from duty free and a Scottish wife, my Mum. More importantly, he returned as a Cardiologist with an MRCP, in those days considered a huge achievement.

He went on to found Talwar Medical Centre on the background of building a reputation of being an honest and competent doctor. Even today, years after his death, the number of people who speak warmly of my father is astounding.

They say "behind every successful man, is a successful woman". My Mum was that woman standing behind my father. This Scottish woman, is today more Indian than many Indians. Playing the perfect manager, administrator, house keeper...…she treated the centre as her baby. Even today people remember my mother standing over the house keeping staff, getting the centre cleaned at 7 AM on a daily basis.

Today the next generation runs this hospital.; the British returned son with his English wife minus the cigars, alias "me". Ideas have changed, methods have changed, but the honesty and integrity of this institution stands.

After all, the foundation was laid by my parents.
